Rev. Dr. James H. Wilkes, Jr. is a native of Gastonia, North Carolina, and the only child of the late Mr. James H. Wilkes, Sr. and Mrs. Deborah Wright Wilkes. A product of the Gaston County Public School System, Dr. Wilkes earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a Master of Divinity from Wake Forest University School of Divinity, and a Doctor of Ministry in Transformational Leadership from Boston University in 2022. Dr. Wilkes accepted his call to ministry at the age of 13. In July 2007, he was licensed to preach the Gospel at the historic Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Gastonia, North Carolina, under the leadership of Pastor James Burris. He was later ordained in 2011.

On July 25, 2016, Dr. Wilkes was unanimously elected Senior Pastor of Elon First Baptist Church in Elon, North Carolina. Under his leadership, the church has continued to grow spiritually, expand its reach, and strengthen its presence in the surrounding community. His ministry reflects a meaningful blend of sound biblical preaching, pastoral care, visionary leadership, and innovative ministry designed to reach people both inside and beyond the walls of the church. Dr. Wilkes has a deep passion for seeing the local church serve as a transformative presence in its community.

Through strategic partnerships and outreach initiatives, he has helped Elon First Baptist Church expand its efforts to meet the spiritual and practical needs of individuals and families throughout Alamance County. In 2024, the church extended its ministry footprint with the launch of its East Burlington Campus, becoming one church serving through two locations.

Beyond the pulpit, Dr. Wilkes has a passion for leadership development and helping churches navigate seasons of transition, growth, and change. As a church consultant, he works alongside congregations and leaders to strengthen ministry systems, develop leadership, and position churches for a healthy and sustainable future. He has a particular heart for rural and smaller congregations, believing that every church, regardless of its size or location, can thrive, make an impact, and faithfully fulfill its God-given mission.

 

The joy of his life is his “sonshine,” James Henry Wilkes III. Dr. Wilkes is also a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. When he is not doing ministry, he enjoys spending time on the golf course.

 

Above all, Dr. Wilkes is a servant of God who loves the Lord, loves people, and remains committed to helping others discover and walk boldly in God's purpose for their lives. His life and ministry are grounded in the promise of Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, saith the Lord, plans to prosper you and give you an expected future."
